This quite complete and superb skull of Allosaurus fragilis is simply magnificent. Out of the renowned Morrison Formation, in Wyoming, this represents a true Jurassic theropod, which is a rarity in itself. This BIG skull measures over three feet in length and is visually striking to put it mildly. The specimen definitely looks ferocious and honors the most dangerous predator of the Jurassic Period in fine form. This is an impressive skull.
The skull is approximately 70 percent complete and includes 12 original teeth. The mandible (lower jaw) is approximately 20 percent complete. The preserved bone is in excellent condition, and the overall skull has been expertly prepared. The skull has been securely mounted on a custom steel and oak wood base.
The fossil was excavated from an ancient riverbed nearby the famed Bone Cabin Quarry in South Central Wyoming. Dinosaur skulls are extremely rare fossils, and a carnivorous dinosaur skull is even more of an uncommon phenomenon. This particularly ominous skull is rather large, among Allosaurs, and features a dark, blackish-brown coloration.
