A Superb Diquis Gold Figure
Costa Rica, c. 700 - 1400 AD

Handsomely crafted, finely detailed hollow cast tumbaga, depicting a standing male holding a whisk-like staff in each hand. Wearing a large two-part headdress with cog-like projections along the perimeter. He is naked aside from a four-strand necklace, coiled tubular earrings, bands at knees and ankles. The face set in a serene trance-like expression with eyes and mouth closed and the cheekbones delineated. A raised hole at crown of head and a similar hole at the belly button. Loop for suspension at back. In excellent condition.
